Ways to use Spider Silk as a Magickal Ingredient

If you're looking for an excellent ingredient for a binding, to incapacitate someone from doing you or yours harm, in works of domination, love spells for trapping a specific person, enemy work or revenge spells, playa you done come to the RIGHT place. Spider Silk is a unique curio I sell in my shop. It's seasonal and I always sell out before the next season comes around.

Every silk wrap I gather is unique and often contains some plant and other organic material - that's *ellogwent Witchspeak* for dead thangs and occasionally live thangs.

Collecting the silk is no small work, either. It's not simply goin' out and rippin' down webs wherever they may be and callin' it a day. Uh-uh. My collection practices are more involved and include reaching out and working with the energy and Spirit of the Spider who made that web, to acknowledging and honoring the Spirit of Death that always lingers around, to working energetically to find the webs that carry the most binding qualities and other energies I'm lookin' for. Always collected ritually with offerings left in gratitude.

You can gather your own Spider Silk, too. I would suggest starting with scouting out where the best webs are in your area, and track when they are at their peak through the year. Some months there are no webs where I live, so I have a calendar I use to help me track the best places and months when the ideal window is open for gathering. It took me a good couple or three years to get a good rhythm for the cycle I was participating in. Stay patient and you'll find yours, too.

Always collect ethically- overharvesting or even being careless with webs still in-use is a recipe for energetic backlash from Nature Spirits as well as a good way to decimate a population to the point that it can affect the local eco-system, and can leave you have nothing to gather the following year. Removing too many webs at the wrong time means the population might increase for other critters of nuisance that Spiders keep under control. The goal is always to work in partnership with these natural elements and Spirits, not dominate or exploit them. Stay Wise. #DontBeABasicWitch

SPIDER LESSONS, FOLKLORE & ATTRIBUTES

Spider is associated with power, hard work, progress and also discreet mysticism.

Spider cleverly weaves its silk into a fully functional web. In weaving our own web of life, Spider teaches us to reflect on life events and the consequences of our choices. We are called to heed the warning of the Spider to consider the effects of our choices, be they already made or still being planned. We are reminded that others around us must be considered when making plans, as they can be caught up in our web unintentionally.

Spider's web is strong and efficient. A construct designed for trapping, entangling and destroying. This energy and intent is powerful magick when used in spells to attract what you want, trap energy or harmful intentions from others, and eliminate influence from negative forces and people.

Spider vibrates to the frequency of infinity, is connected to the Feminine, cycles, and rebirth as much as it is to death, creativity, defensive strategies and fate.

In some traditions, Spiders are regarded as an icon of protection, especially against storms and destructive calamities.

Use this silk to weave circumstances and fates for people to be captured or caught in to bring your will into existence. It could be for love or curse or something in between. Only you, the Witch, can determine who will be caught in your web and what you will do with them once you have them!

‘No matter how hard the wind blows, a spider’s web will stay intact. A spider’s web does not disintegrate, as the web has the capacity to move and stay fluid. A web keeps its form and moves with the wind. Scientists have discovered that the filament used to spin a spider’s web is much stronger than steel and far more resilient.’ –Ken Page

Humans have been making use of spider silk for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks used cobwebs to stop wounds from bleeding and the Aborigines used silk as fishing lines for small fish. More recently, silk was used as the crosshairs in optical targeting devices such as guns and telescopes until World War II and people of the Solomon Islands still use silk as fish nets.

In some Native American traditions, Spiders are regarded as an icon of protection, especially against storms and destructive calamities.

Current research in spider silk involves its potential use as an incredibly strong and versatile material. If the production of spider silk ever becomes industrially viable, it could replace Kevlar and be used to make a diverse range of items such as:

  • Bullet-proof clothing

  • Wear-resistant lightweight clothing

  • Ropes, nets, seat belts, parachutes

  • Rust-free panels on motor vehicles or boats

  • Biodegradable bottles

  • Bandages, surgical thread

  • Artificial tendons or ligaments, supports for weak blood vessels.

Let the above folklore and historical associations be a guide for your creativity in ways to employ Spider Silk in your magickal practice.
